The Chameleon

In 2015, this look won 2nd Place in the Rotary Contest and was displayed at The Bordeaux International Fair.

Coming from Haiti and living in France, adaptation was crucial for me. Everyday, I learned to adapt to the french culture and mentality. This suit was my way of portraying the adaption process or as I call it “Chameleonisation”.

It tells the story of a young woman who usually dresses in casual wear but has to wear a tailored suit in order to fit in the standards of the industry. However she isn’t a business woman yet. That’s why the sleeves are tailored on top but the armholes are made of a stretchy fabric usually used for sweaters.

This young woman is also fond of bright colors but she’s required to wear darker neutral colors in order to meet the expectations of her surroundings. Her personal taste still remains hidden inside, hence the yellow lining. She is undergoing the “chameleonisation” and that is why there is a color palette evolving from yellow to navy bleu.

The bodysuit, made out of a silver mirror like fabric, was inspired by Kip Omolade’s masks and serves as a metaphor that shows her mirroring society despite her own culture.
